A controlled explosion was carried out on a viable explosive device in Waterford City last night.

Gardaí called the Army bomb disposal team to a house on the Birchwood estate last night following the discovery of a suspicious device at the back of the premises.

The bomb disposal team arrived at the scene at 4.30am and a controlled explosion was carried out to make the device safe.

The all-clear was given at 6.15am. Gardaí recovered the remains of the device and are carrying out a technical examination as part of their investigation into the incident.

It is not clear at this stage if last night's incident is related to an ongoing fued between four families in the city.

It emerged this week that gardaí have worked more than 12,000 hours overtime at an estimated cost of about €400,000 during the past two months in an effort to keep the peace between the families.
