THE “VAST majority” of local radio stations reapplying for their licences are financially viable despite the recession, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has said.

In a consultation document on its licensing plan for the next two years, the BAI has said the franchise map should remain as it is because of the current economic environment and the success of existing radio stations in maintaining their listenerships.

The BAI said a minimum population of 75,000 adults and a potential turnover of €1 million were required for a station to have a chance of becoming established and financially viable, although most have lost between 10 per cent and 30 per cent of their revenues as a result of the recession.

It recommended, however, that its Contracts Awards Committee invite applications for music-driven services for 15- to 34-year-olds with a focus on general music, a similar service focused on new music, a music-driven service for 25- to 44-year-olds and a niche-driven service that will add to diversity.
