Trinity College Dublin honoured three eminent Irish people today by announcing theyhave been elected Honorary Fellows of the college.

The three are novelist Ms Jennifer Johnston, journalist Mr Bruce Arnold and Mr Patrick Murphy, an art collector.

Mr Arnold is Chief Political Columnist with the Irish Independentand the author of 15 books, including the authorised biography of painter Jack B Yeats and studies of the political careers of Mr Charlie Haughey and Mrs Margaret Thatcher.

Novelist and Aosdána member Ms Johnston's output includes such titles as The Captains and the Kingsand The Gingerbread Woman.

Mr Murphy is a retired chief executive of the Guinness group who became an avid collector of Irish paintings. He has been Chairman of ROSC and of the Contemporary Irish Art Society, and organised a series of Visual Art Exhibitions in Brussels in 1990 and 1996 to celebrate Ireland’s Presidency of the European Union.

The announcement was made this morning by the Provost of the College, Dr Thomas Mitchell.

Three new fellows and 49 scholars of the college were also announced today.
