Gardai in Co Donegal say they have received no assistance from the public in their investigation into an attack on a Traveller woman and her 12 children.

An incident room has been set up Gardai in Ballyshannon following the attack last week in which a potentially lethal explosive device was used. The device included a number of four-inch bolts.

"There have been no developments in the investigation," a garda said i at in Ballyshannon. "No one has come forward with information."

The attack on the family took place at about 9.30 p.m. last Friday. The homemade device blew a hole in the side of the caravan while the 33-year-old woman and her children, aged between three and 13, were inside. Several of the children received cuts and bruises from flying debris.

Remnants of the device have been sent to forensic experts in Dublin, and the family has been taken to local accommodation.

A Garda spokesman said a rock was thrown through the caravan window before the device exploded.

The caravan is in The Rock area of the town. There was tension in Ballyshannon throughout the summer over the presence of several Traveller families in the Market Yard area.

The local press had been critical of their behaviour, although also about Donegal County Council's failure to provide a halting site in the county.

People in the town said they did not believe locals were behind the attack. The Garda incident room at Ballyshannon can be contacted at (072) 51103.
