THREE WOMEN have been killed in road crashes in Mayo and Waterford over the weekend.

Shortly before noon on Saturday a Polish woman and her teenage daughter were killed in a single-vehicle crash in Co Mayo.

The 39-year-old woman and her 15-year-old daughter were passengers in a car that went out of control and crashed on the Quay Road at Knockbrendan in Ballina.

The women were seeing relatives in Enniscrone, Co Sligo, and were only in Ireland for a short visit. They were due to return to their home in Krakow this week.

Three other people were in the car when it went out of control at a narrow bend in the coast road. It broke through a fence and overturned in a nearby field.

The mother and daughter were killed instantly.

The driver and two other passengers were injured and were taken to Mayo General Hospital.

Gardaí in Ballina have appealed to anyone who may have seen the accident or who were using the road between Ballina and Enniscrone around the time of the crash to contact them on 096-20560.

On Saturday afternoon a third woman was killed in a car crash in Waterford.

The crash happened on the main Waterford to Dungarvan Road at 1.30 pm.

The 64-year-old was walking along the road at The Pike, near Dungarvan, when she was struck by a car.

Emergency services attended the scene and the woman was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital, but she died there shortly afterwards.

She was a native of Tallow, Co Waterford.

“Anyone who may have witnessed this collision or have any information is asked to contact Dungarvan Garda station on 058-48600 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111,” a Garda spokesman said.

A total of three people lost their lives on Irish roads during the August bank holiday weekend in 2009.

Before this weekend’s incidents, 116 people had lost their lives on Irish roads in 2010. This represents a decrease of 20 on the same period last year.
