ABOUT 30 members of staff with the travel company Thomas Cook protested outside its main Dublin branch yesterday in an effort to save jobs in its Irish operation.

Jobs are under threat as the company restructures its business, part of which would entail closing its two Dublin outlets on Grafton Street and North Earl Street and its Direct Holidays outlet in Talbot Street.

Thomas Cook is the oldest travel agency in the State having been operating here for 125 years.

Its head office is in Peterborough, England, and up to 2,000 jobs have been cut across Britain as high street outlets have been closed.

Talks had been due to get under way between management and staff in Dublin yesterday on the terms of the company’s proposed withdrawal but were postponed as the company considers a plan to save some of its Irish operation.

Talks are expected to get under way early next week, possibly in London.
