A man in his 70s was killed on Monday morning when he was hit by a car on the outskirts of Claremorris, Co Mayo.

The victim was walking near the McWilliam Park Hotel at about 7.30am when he was knocked down. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the vehicle was uninjured.

The body was taken to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar where a post mortem examination will be carried out.

Gardaí have closed the N17 from the exit slip road at the McWilliam Park Hotel to the old Ballindine Road pending the completion of a forensic examination.

Traffic is being diverted and gardaí ask drivers to avoid the area.
