Prelude and Fugue in E flat, BWV552 - Bach

Ann Elise Smoot's organ recital at St Michael's, Dun Laoghaire, last night was short and sweet. Well, no. It was a lot more than that. Vivacity of spirit, and lightness of finger and foot, were in evidence from the opening of Bach's Buxtehude-like Prelude and Fugue in G, BWV550.

A winning way with French repertoire was shown in the Recit de tierce en taille from Grigny's Livre d'orgue, the projection firm and shapely, never vulgar.

Bach's D minor Sonata was done with breathtaking ease. Mendelssohn's in C minor made the brief visit to the 19th century every bit as rewarding as the encounters with earlier music had been. And Bach's great St Anne Prelude and Fugue, unflagging in energy and played with a great sense of sweep, brought the 55 minutes of music to an exhilarating close.

A perfect antidote to the grey damp of an Irish August Sunday.
