Minister for Justice Alan Shatter has expressed his sympathy to the family of a Garda sergeant who died in a single-vehicle crash in Co Wicklow on Monday morning.

Father-of-five Sgt Feargal McHugh (46) had just come off duty when he apparently lost control of his car and hit a safety barrier at the side of the N11.

His removal took place to the Holy Rosary Church in Greystones, Co Wicklow, last night and his funeral takes place this morning.

“I wish to express my deepest sympathy to the family of Garda Sgt McHugh on this sudden loss,” Mr Shatter said in a statement sent from Australia yesterday. He extended condolences to the sergeant’s colleagues.

“The Garda Síochána have lost a dedicated member who was known throughout the community he served,” Mr Shatter said.

Sgt McHugh’s son had recently joined the Garda reserve “and carries on a proud tradition of service in the family”, the Minister said. Sgt McHugh is survived by his wife, Ann, and children Emma, Eoin, Lisa, Stephen and Claire.
