A second man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Romanian man whose body was found in a suitcase dumped in Dublin’s Royal Canal, the Gardaí said today.

Mr Adrian Bestea, a 21-year-old Romanian, died after suffering head injuries and his body was found nearly two weeks later by two teenagers in the canal on July 20 last.

A 28-year-old Ukrainian man, Igor Derjhack, was arrested on Thursday and charged yesterday, before Dublin District Court, with assaulting Mr Bestea.

At 5 a.m. this morning a Latvian man in his early 30s was arrested in Dublin city centre and taken to Mountjoy Garda Station.

A garda spokesman told ireland.comthat the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is still considering whether or not the man is to be charged in the Dublin District Court this afternoon.

The man can be detained for up to 12 hours before he must be released or charged.

Mr Bestea arrived in Ireland by boat at Rosslare two years ago, staying in initially in Co Wexford before moving to Dublin where he worked on construction sites.

It was two weeks before the remains in the suitcase were identified as those of Mr Bestea and then only after Gardaí took the unusual step of publicising a photograph of the dead man's face.
