On this week's Inside Politics podcast, Ailbhe Smyth, co-director of Together for Yes, joins Hugh Linehan and Pat Leahy to discuss campaigning in the referendum on the Eighth Amendment to date.
It is a big week for the pro-repeal umbrella group, which launched an online fundraiser on Tuesday morning that saw donations in excess of €300,000 in the first 24 hours.
Smyth says they are “thrilled and pleased” by the response and she believes it is an indication of wide public support for a repeal of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution.
Responding to criticism that the pro-repeal side has been slower out of the blocks than the anti-abortion campaign, Smyth says their campaign plan is on schedule and they “remain focused on what it is we need to do.”
She also rejects the suggestion that undecided voters may be put off by the tone of some of the campaigning in the referendum, saying “we are aware that you have to meet people where they’re at and not where you think they should be.”
