LABOUR’S PARLIAMENTARY party meeting was drawing to a close last Wednesday evening when Cork South-West TD Michael McCarthy cleared his throat and addressed his leader.
“I want to ask the Tánaiste a very serious question,” he said to Eamon Gilmore, who visibly tensed. What might it be about? Septic tank? Budget cuts? The quality of his leadership?
“In relation to the vacant position of junior minister: he needs to make the announcement as soon as possible. There are people in this room who are on their fourth new suit and they have no money left for Christmas!” Everyone laughed, although one or two of the hopefuls laughed less heartily than the rest.
