An independent political group in South Tipperary is preparing to make a strong bid for a Dail seat after another good showing in the local elections.

The Workers' and Unemployed Action Group, which retained its four seats on Clonmel Corporation, is now the dominant leftwing force in the town and is targeting the Labour Party seat in the next general election.

As well as holding one third of the corporation seats, the group took a second seat on South Tipperary County Council, with its main candidate, Mr Seamus Healy, a runaway poll-topper in both elections.

The South Tipperary results gave both Fianna Fail and Fine Gael something to cheer about. Fine Gael upset the odds by holding three out of four seats in the Cashel area. That result was reversed in Cahir, where Fianna Fail took three of the four seats.
