The Oireachtas banking inquiry is to publish its final report by January 20th, 2016.

Members of the Oireachtas committee were told on Wednesday that a draft of the report would be ready to examine early next week.

The TDs and Senators will be given up to a week to examine its contents and seek any changes.

The members were told that they will not be able to take any electronic equipment with them when assessing the report, to avoid any leaking of the document or its findings to the media.

It is understood that a number of members expressed opposition to this requirement.

Investigation team

The draft report is being prepared by the investigation team working with the inquiry.

Its contents, when agreed by all members, will be distributed to all interested parties.

These interested parties will be given three weeks to respond to the draft.

The final report is due to be completed by January 20th.

The work of the committee had been stalled due to a number of allegations made by a whistleblower working with the inquiry.

Banking inquiry chairman Ciaran Lynch has sought an extension until the end of January for the report.

Members are confident that the work of the committee will be complete before that date.
