Police in Fermanagh are working on a theory that the five-year-old boy shot in a school playground on Friday may have been struck accidentally by a stray bullet.

Darragh Summers, who was in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast last night, was injured in the playground of St Patrick's primary school in Mullinaskea, a village outside Enniskillen.

The incident happened at 1.10pm when the playground was packed with 180 children. Police say it is still unclear how Darragh was shot but they suspect he could have been hit by a stray bullet from a hunter's gun.

They are particularly anxious to speak to anyone who was hunting in the area between 1pm and 3pm.

"Police are trying to build up a picture of how this happened. We are also seeking information about any shooting that may have taken place in the area over the last few weeks," a spokeswoman said. Police have also contacted gun clubs in the area.

Darragh, from the village of Drumbeg outside Enniskillen, was transferred from the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen to the intensive care unit of the Royal Victoria Hospital.

His parents, Gerald and Janine, have asked for privacy to be with him.

Police said yesterday they wanted to speak to the occupants of a people carrier-type vehicle seen near the school around the time of the shooting. They also want to talk to the occupants of a silver Ford Mondeo seen in the area around lunchtime last Wednesday.
