The Garda authorities are drafting 155 recruits into Dublin city on Monday to help cope with the Christmas traffic. Plans have also been announced for additional bus and rail services in the city.

At a conference on urban congestion yesterday, Chief Supt Jack Behan of the Traffic Department in Dublin Castle said the 155 probationers would work with the traffic unit to provide more than 212 foot patrols a day in the city.

Motorcycle and car patrols, tow vans and the Garda Air Support Unit will also be operative.

Several suburbs have also been selected for special campaigns against illegal parking, where temporary traffic wardens have been assigned to work with gardai. These are Blanchardstown, Swords, Tallaght, Dundrum, Stillorgan, Clondalkin, Lucan and Blackrock.

Extra buses will operate during off-peak hours, Bus Atha Cliath has announced. It is also reducing the price of the three-day rambler ticket, from £9 to £5.50.

The Nitelink service is also to be extended. From yesterday up to and including Friday, December 31st, Nitelink will operate every night except on Sundays, December 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Additional DART capacity will be provided on Saturdays, December 4th, 11th and 18th, with additional Sunday services on December 5th, 12th and 19th.
