Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to an incident in which a 58-year-old man was killed when he was hit by a car near Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim, on Friday night.

He was Pat Callaghan, a widower and a father-of-five from Drummonds, Glencar.

Mr Callaghan was one of three people killed in road collisions over the weekend.

Gardaí said Mr Callaghan was walking on the N16 at Tomrud, five miles from Manorhamilton, shortly before 10pm when he was struck by a car and killed. Anyone travelling on the road at the time who may have seen Mr Callaghan is asked to contact Manorhamilton Garda station.

An investigation is also under way into the death of a woman on Saturday.

The woman, aged in her 80s, was a passenger in a car involved in a crash at Rathmore, on the N72 between Mallow and Killarney at 5.20pm.

Gardaí had not named the woman last night.

Yesterday, a 41-year-old man was seriously injured when the vehicle in which he was travelling went out of control and struck a concrete post in Co Tipperary.

The incident occurred at Brittas, Thurles, at 7.35am. The driver of the car, the only occupant of the vehicle, died in hospital.

He will not be named until relatives have been notified.

In Dublin, an appeal has also been renewed for assistance in tracing the whereabouts of a 58-year-old Ballymun woman who is missing for more then one week.

Bernie Gavan went missing on Sunday, August 19th, from Daneswood House, Ballymun Road at approximately 2.30pm and has not been seen since. She is 5ft tall with blonde hair and she wears glasses.

When last seen she was wearing a pink jacket, pink top, pink shoes and black pants.

Bernie's family and gardaí fear for her safety ,and any anyone with information should contact gardaí at Whitehall, Dublin.

Meanwhile, gardaí in Youghal, Co Cork, have named the man who was killed in a fatal road traffic collision last Thursday.

He was Kevin Sexton (60), from Oak Hill, Youghal.
