Slane Castle owner Lord Henry Mountcharles has announced there will be no concert at the Co Meath venue this year.

In a statement posted on his Slane Castle Facebook page this morning, Lord Henry was quoted as saying: "there will be no Slane this year, but 2013 will be busy" .

The castle has previously hosted major rock concerts by artists including U2, the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Guns N Roses. Concerts regularly attracted crowds in excess of 80,000. The Kings of Leon headlined last year.

Earlier this month, Lord Henry said he had kept “one date open” for one particular act and a source close to Slane Castle said at the time that the date being held was August 25th.

Today's announcement adds to a list of cancellations of summer concerts following the withdrawal of The Stranglers and The Human League from the Summer Sessions music festival which was scheduled for Dublin’s Iveagh Gardens over the May bank holiday weekend.

It was announced last December by music promotion company MCD that Oxegen, the biggest music event in Ireland, will not be taking place this year.

The promoter has applied for a licence to stage up to six concerts in the Phoenix Park next July where acts including seminal Manchester band The Stone Roses, Belfast's Snow Patrol and Florence & The Machine are billed to play.

Each concert will have a capacity for up to 45,500 people.

The boutique festival Electric Picnic will go ahead as scheduled at Stradbally House, Co Laois, from August 31st to September 2nd.
