THE SHOP assistant who tracked down the owner of a winning lottery ticket has said he wants nothing from the winner.
Tom Heavey, who works at McConnell’s Centra in Drogheda, was dubbed the “honest shop-keeper” at the weekend after a customer left the shop without the Lotto ticket he had just bought. He had left it on the counter.
Mr Heavey marked the ticket as “paid for” and put it away for safe-keeping. The following morning he discovered that the ticket had won €350,000. He and the manager examined CCTV footage and put out an appeal for the winner to come forward.
Dermot Finglas (35), a DJ living in Drogheda, came forward as the man seen on the CCTV footage leaving his ticket on the counter. Interviewed on his win, he said he would “look after” Mr Heavey.
Speaking yesterday, Mr Heavey said he didn’t want money. “He probably will give me a bit and that is nice but I don’t want anyone to think I’d be looking for money.” Mr Finglas has picked up his cheque from the National Lottery but won’t be able to cash it until this morning.
He has said he would buy Mr Heavey a mobile camper van, something he has always wanted.
It has also been confirmed that a Euromillions ticket that won half of Saturday night’s €58 million jackpot was bought in Dublin. A spokesman for the National Lottery would not reveal the location of the shop where it was bought.
The other winning ticket was sold in Britain. Each winner will receive a cheque for €29,430,608. The winning numbers were 6, 14, 16, 34, and 50, with lucky stars 4 and 6.
