THE TARA Towers hotel on Merrion Road in Dublin was open for business again last night after a fire in one of the rooms yesterday.

There were no casualties after the fire broke out in a third-floor bedroom shortly before 1pm. Hotel staff evacuated the guests and 12 units of Dublin Fire Brigade arrived within minutes.

A window in the bedroom facing Merrion Road was blown out and there was smoke damage, mainly to the third floor and fourth floor.

Some 90 of the hotel’s 111 rooms were occupied yesterday, but it was not clear whether the room in which the fire occurred was occupied.

“During the day people are out shopping and doing things, so it’s difficult to get a full count – so we searched the whole building,” Jim Sargent of Dublin Fire Brigade said. “We didn’t have to rescue anyone from the building,” he added.

Gardaí are investigating the cause of the fire.

A hotel spokeswoman said it was “business as usual” last night, with the hotel accommodating most of the guests who were booked in. The hotel is run by the Mercer Accommodation Group.
