Three in every four public servants receives an annual salary below €60,000, according to figures issued by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin.
Almost 20,000 public servants earn €20,000 or less per annum; more than a third are paid €40,000 or less and another third get between €40,000 and €60,000.
"It is clear from the calls by some politicians and media commentators for a review of the Croke Park Agreement that they are misinformed about the levels of pay in the public service," Labour TD Joanna Tuffy said.
The figures issued in response to a parliamentary question from Ms Tuffy, a Dublin Mid-West deputy, show that, out of the total figure of 300,000 public servants, three-quarters or 225,649 earn €60,000 or less.
A total of 19,442 public servants earn €20,000 or less. More than a third of public servants, a total of 112,695, earn €40,000 or less - this figure being inclusive of those earning €20,000 or less.
"If you put these incomes into the context of the 'Survey of Incomes and Living Conditions 2010', preliminary results of which were published recently, it is clear that the vast majority of public servants are on low to middle incomes," Ms Tuffy said.
