Gardaí believe a number of people they wish to interview in connection with the murder of a man in Co Tipperary over the weekend have gone into hiding.

Detectives investigating the murder of Fergus Roche (30) in Clonmel are anxious to speak to a number of foreign national men in relation to the murder.

However they have not been seen since Mr Roche's remains were found at a burning house in a housing estate in the Tipperary town on Saturday.

Gardaí were alerted to the incident by a unit of the local fire brigade which had been called to a house fire at about 5.30am on Saturday in Heywood Close, Clonmel. When the fire brigade personnel reached the scene and began bringing the fire under control, they recovered Mr Roche's body. Initial examinations indicated that he had a number of wounds to his body, and gardaí immediately began treating the death as suspicious.

A postmortem later revealed Mr Roche died of a stab wound, and gardaí immediately upgraded their investigations to a murder inquiry.

The dead man lived at Cooleen's Close, Clonmel, just a short distance from where he was found.

While a number of people have been interviewed by gardaí in relation to the murder there had been no arrests last night.

Gardaí have appealed for anybody with information on the killing to come forward.

Detectives are also anxious to speak to anybody who may have been in Mr Roche's company on Friday night or in the early hours of Saturday.
