A NEW management shake-up initiated by Minister for Health James Reilly at the west’s largest public hospital has been welcomed by HSE West forum chairman Pádraig Conneely.
Dr Reilly has sanctioned the recruitment of a chief executive, chief operating officer and chief financial officer for the Galway University Hospitals (GUH) group.
The position of chief executive has been advertised at an annual salary of €145,000, while the two other posts carry salaries ranging between €94,000 and €117,000.
Mr Conneely, a former Fine Gael Galway city mayor, welcomed the swift action by the Minister and said he hoped it would result in better patient care.
Late last week, Dr Reilly asked his department to investigate the reported resignation or threatened resignation of colorectal surgeon Myles Joyce over inadequate theatre time and shortage of theatre nurses at GUH.
The most recent HealthStats compiled by the HSE identified GUH as the worst performing hospital in the State.
