A 31-year-old man was released on bail pending further inquiries following an incident in east Belfast at the weekend which left a two-year-old boy critically injured in hospital and his mother suffering less serious injuries.

The incident happened shortly before 4pm on Saturday when, it is believed, an empty parked car rolled down a distance of the Comber Road in Dundonald and struck the woman, who was wheeling a buggy.

The child was taken to the nearby Ulster Hospital in Dundonald and later transferred to the intensive care unit of the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast.

He was last night in a “critical” condition.

The woman suffered injuries which police said were understood to be non-life-threatening. The PSNI has appealed for witnesses who may be able to give accounts of what happened.
