Garda∅ in Mayo are appealing for the driver of a car involved in a hit-and-run accident between Westport and Castlebar early yesterday to come forward.

A young man was killed in the accident which is believed to have occurred shortly before 4 a.m. at the Aughagower junction on the Westport-Castlebar route.

The man was named yesterday as Mr Edwin Gaughan, in his late 20s, who is from Castlebar.

A pathologist carried out a post mortem on behalf of the State Pathologist yesterday, and the scene was preserved for some hours for examination.

A call to the garda∅ at 3.55 a.m. alerted the emergency services to the accident, and the source of this call was later identified.

Supt Joe Staunton said garda∅ in Westport were appealing to the driver to come forward, and were also asking anyone who was in the area between 3 a.m. and 4.30 a.m. to assist them.

They have also advised garage owners to be on the alert for a vehicle with suspicious damage, and to contact them.
