A man has appeared in court today in relation to the death of a woman following an incident outside Dublin's Rotunda Hospital earlier this month.
Wesley Ward (32), Aras na Cluaine, Clondalkin, Dublin 22, appeared before Dublin District Court and was charged with assault causing harm under Section 3 of the Non Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.
Tracey O'Brien (31), with an address at North Circular Road, Dublin, died on Thursday at Beaumont hospital. She had been critically ill since an attack outside the Rotunda hospital on Parnell Street in the north inner city on June 18th.
Garda Det Sgt Desmond McTiernan told the court Mr Ward was arrested on Thursday at Store Street Garda Station and made no reply on being charged.
Defence Counsel Aoife O’Leary applied for bail, and Det Sgt McTiernan told the court he had no objection to this subject to a number of conditions.
Setting out bail conditions, Judge Bridget Reilly ordered Mr Ward, who is unemployed, to sign on daily at Clondalkin Garda Station, stay away from the Rotunda hospital area, and surrender his passport. Ms O'Leary told the court Mr Ward did not have a passport.
Judge Reilly remanded Mr Ward in custody to appear in court on July 24th with consent to bail pending approval of his mother as independent surety for bail of €5,000. The judge also instructed Mr Ward to provide a bond of €500.
Gardaí have also questioned a woman (34) in relation to the fatal attack. She was released without charge, and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
