Gardaí have launched a murder investigation after a man with gunshot wounds was left at a hospital and later died from his injuries. The incident occurred late last night in Dublin.

The victim was a 35-year-old man – Christopher Warren from St Teresa’s Gardens in Dolphin’s Barn in Dublin’s south inner city.

He was dropped off by car at St James Hospital in the south inner city at around 7pm suffering from gunshot wounds. He underwent emergency medical treatment but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The people who left him at the hospital did not wait with him, though the vehicle he was transported to St James’s in was later located on Cork St in Dublin 8.

The dead man was known to gardaí. His brother Paul Warren was aged 24 years when he was shot dead in February 2004. He was gunned down in Grey’s Pub in Newmarket Square, Dublin, as part of a feud between crime gangs in the neighbouring Dublin 8 suburbs of Crumlin and Drimnagh.

The man who shot Paul Warren, Gary Bryan was himself aged 31 when he was shot dead two years later as part of the same feud. He carried out that killing on the orders of a gang leader who was in jail at the time but had access to a mobile phone.

The Crumlin-Drimnagh feud has been mainly quiet of late but gardaí were last night trying to establish if Christopher Warren was shot dead in a feud related attack. In the past, some people left at hospitals with gunshot wounds have been injured when firearms went off accidentally.

However, Garda sources said the investigation was at a very early stage and that no clear circumstance or motive had been established for the deceased’s shooting.

Forensic analysis

The vehicle in which the dead man was brought to the hospital will undergo forensic analysis and the spot where it was found had been sealed off by gardaí and was due to be examined this morning by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.

Most of those engaged in feuding in Crumlin and Drimnagh are either dead, in prison or abroad and the feud has been quiet in recent years.

However, in September a criminal linked to one of the feuding gangs was shot dead at his home in Co Laois. Gerard Eglington, a 27-year-old originally from Dublin, was gunned down in September 24th at a house in Portarlington. It is unclear if Christopher Warren’s death is in any way linked to Eglington’s.
