The shooting happened at around 9.20pm in Transalla near the Co Donegal village of St Johnston.

The man was driving up to his house in a car accompanied by a female passenger in her 20’s when a number of masked men, possibly up to four, approached the car.

It is believed the wounded man, who has been living in the townland of Transallagh for a year, may have driven seven miles from where he was shot to a friend's house in Mondooey, Manorcunningham to raise the alarm. He was taken to Letterkenny Hospital, where he underwent surgery last night. His injuries are not serious.

A three-month-old St Bernard pup, which belonged to the injured man’s girlfriend, was also wounded in the attack and is recovering.

The silver Audi car was found parked in the driveway of a large detached bungalow with a number of bullet holes in the windscreen.

Both the scene of the shooting and the house where the man raised the alarm were sealed off pending technical examinations by Garda crime scene examiners. Gardaí have asked anyone with any information to contact Letterkenny Garda station on 074 9167100.
