Louth port to get £11m facelift

Greenore port in Co Louth is to embark on an £11 million development plan

Greenore port in Co Louth is to embark on an £11 million development plan. The Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources, Dr Woods, on a visit there yesterday, announced a £3 million EU-State contribution towards refurbishment and deepening of the quay wall.

The investment aims to enhance Greenore's capacity as a modern efficient port by providing deeper draught for shipping. The company hopes to attract back business lost due to draught restrictions. Ships of up to 25,000 metric tonnes should be able to berth there when the dredging work is complete.

Built in the 1870s by the London and North-western Railway Company, Greenore was bought by Dublin-based businessman Mr Aodaghan O'Rahilly in 1956. In the 1960s, the first container service from this island was initiated. It began to handle bulk traffic and general cargo in the 1970s. The £3 million quay refurbishment is the first phase in the port's development.
