Almost 60,000 Leaving Cert students around the State are receiving their exam results today. The marks were made available in schools from 10 a.m. and for the first time were posted on the Web at www.examinations.ieat midday.
The site was briefly overwhelmed at midday when thousands of students logged on at the same time, according to the Department of Education. Users logging on at that time were unable to enter the site for a period of about fifteen to twenty minutes. A spokesperson for the Department said the site was now "working fine."

Today's results show a higher proportion of honours this year despite the disruption caused to students during the ASTI teachers’ strike.
A helpline, 1800 265165, will be available for the next three days and for a further three days when the offers of third-level places are made.
The Minister for Education and Science, Dr. Michael Woods, congratulated students, their parents and teachers on the results achieved in this year's Leaving Certificate. He said, "the Ireland of 2001 is a land of opportunity for those who have a Leaving Certificate, and everyone who sat the exam will get one".
"With 59,499 students achieving the Leaving Cert this year there are more places than ever - some 63,000 - available in Institutes and Colleges of Further and Higher Education providing unprecedented options for students. The Leaving Certificate is valuable currency which has real worth in the world of employment, training and further education".
Dr. Woods said, "I am pleased to note that the results this year overall are very satisfactory. They follow a broadly similar pattern to those of other years but with a higher proportion receiving honours than last year."
