Kenny to visit Gaza this month

FINE GAEL leader Enda Kenny is to visit the Gaza Strip later this month, but he will not be meeting Hamas representatives.

FINE GAEL leader Enda Kenny is to visit the Gaza Strip later this month, but he will not be meeting Hamas representatives.

Mr Kenny’s three-day tour of the region, from April 22nd to 25th, will include Israel and the West Bank. He plans to go to the Israeli town of Sderot which has been subjected to rocket attacks from Palestinian militants in Gaza.

He also plans to meet Israeli politicians as well as the president of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas and Palestinian minister of information and foreign affairs, Riyad al-Maliki.

Prior to the latest outbreak of conflict in Gaza, the Fine Gael leader had intended to make his visit at the start of the year.

Meanwhile, Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams visited Gaza yesterday morning where he met aid officials and NGO representatives.

Mr Adams was also due to meet the head of the United National Relief and Works Agency in Gaza, Irishman John Ging, yesterday evening. On Tuesday evening last in Israel, Mr Adams met local NGOs and representatives of the Van Leer Institute, a Jerusalem-based think tank.
