The Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland has warned Junior Cert student celebrating their results today to be aware of the dangers of alcohol.
The ASTI President, Mr PJ Sheehy, urged students not to "let celebrations end in regret". He also called on publicans and off-licences to be diligent in not serving underage customers.
"It is understandable and right that students should celebrate achieving this Certificate. However, I would urge all students, parents and publicans to ensure that today's celebrations do not end in regret," he said.
Almost 60,000 Junior Cert students get their results today. In previous years, towns and cities have seen hordes of drunken teenagers spilling out onto the streets.
Some schools have resorted to issuing results later in the afternoon to prevent students from making plans to meet up and drink all day.
A number of schools are also involving parents in the day's events to prevent drinking.
