Imelda and Gerard will be presented with the first euro bank-notes in a specially designed commemorative case.

The Irish winners of the competition will also receive a laptop, a certificate signed by Mr Duisenberg and T-shirts for their classmates.

The competition was open to all children between eight and 12 and resident in the 12 countries of the euro area.

Based on a series of multiple choice questions, it was designed to encourage children to familiarise themselves with the new euro banknotes.
