University Hospital Galway has introduced visitor restrictions due to a suspected outbreak of norovirus, commonly known as the “winter vomiting bug”, at two wards. Visitors to patients in St Mary’s and St Teresa’s wards have been asked to make essential trips to the hospital only, and to use the hand gels supplied if entering the facility. The hospital says children should not visit at all due to their susceptibility to the virus.
Symptoms are vomiting and/or diarrhoea, and may last for two to three days.
Members of the public affected by the virus have been asked not to visit the hospital, and to phone their GP first before presenting at a clinic.
Outpatients with pre-planned appointments at the hospital should attend as normal.
