Gardaí have arrested a man and a woman for questioning after a man in his early 60s was stabbed in the face when he confronted burglars breaking into his house in Blarney, Co Cork.
The assault happened when a couple discovered an intruder in their house in the Paud’s Cross area at around 8.45pm on Monday.
The man challenged the intruder and managed to force him out of the house but a struggle ensued outside and the intruder produced a knife and stabbed the man in the face.
The woman raised the alarm and the man was taken to Cork University Hospital where he was treated for a serious but non-life threatening facial injury.
Gardaí were alerted and began an investigation and later arrested a man (30) and woman (24) in an estate in the Tower area of Blarney at around 10pm.
The pair were arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act which allows gardaí to detain suspects for up to 24 hours before they have to be released or charged.
The man was taken to Gurranebraher Garda station for questioning about the aggravated burglary while the woman was taken to Mayfield Garda station.
The injured man has been discharged from Cork University Hospital after receiving stitches to a facial wound. A formal statement will be taken from him about the incident. Garda technical staff have started a forensic examination of the house where the break-in happened and CCTV is also being viewed.
