Two arrested after gardaí seize €400,000 worth of drugs in east Cork

Gardaí have arrested a man and woman in their 30s for questioning following the seizure of €400,000 worth of drugs as part of Operation Tara in Co Cork on Monday night.

Officers from the Midleton Drugs Unit and Midleton District Crime Unit in East Cork stopped a car on the N25 in the Glounthaune area at around 7.30pm.

Officers found 20kg of cannabis herb and arrested the couple, a 35-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman under drugs trafficking legislation which allows gardaí to detain suspects for up to seven days.

The couple, who are from the Castlemartyr/Ladysbridge area, were taken to Cobh Garda Station for questioning of the seizure which gardaí have described as “significant”.

The drugs will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland in Dublin for analysis while the car was seized and will be forensically examined by garda technical experts for DNA and fingerprint evidence.

Gardaí later carried out a follow up search of a house in the Castlemartyr/Ladysbridge area but no further drugs were found. Gardaí say their inquiries are continuing into the seizure.
