Shane Lowry has married his long-term fiancée Wendy Honner in New York.

The Clara golfer and Laois-native nurse had been engaged since December 2014.

Ms Honner caddied for Mr Lowry at the par-3 contest ahead of the Masters at Augusta last week and the couple tied the knot on their way home from Augusta, Georgia.

Following their appearance at Augusta, Mr Lowry tweeted: “Great fun playing the par 3 today. Had a decent looking caddy on the bag today too @wendyirishonner.”

The couple had been widely expected to marry this year, but stopped in New York to tie the knot, according to Midlands Radio FM103, the couple’s local radio station.

The couple met when each was out socialising with separate groups of friends and have been together for about five years.

“I met her on a random night out,” Mr Lowry later explained of their introduction. Nobody introduced us or anything and no, it wasn’t in Coppers.”

They became engaged in Dubai in 2014.

Mr Lowry now has a break from tournament golf until the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hallow on May 5th.
