A search resumed this morning (Thursday) off the southeast coast for a man who was reported missing when he didn’t return home from work yesterday evening.

The man's car was found parked at Brownstown Head near Tramore in Co Waterford and a family member raised the alarm yesterday evening, prompting a major search across the coast from Tramore to Dunmore-East.

Up to 70 people are involved in the search this morning including Coast Guard volunteers and volunteers from Tramore Cliff Rescue along with members of the public and members of the man's family. The new S92 Coast Guard helicopter has been tasked and gardaí are also involved in the search.

The man, who is in late 40s and has a wife and children, is from the local area and works with Waterford County Council.

The search continued until after 1am this morning before being called off for the night, before resuming at first light. Sea conditions were described as “rough” this morning.

It’s understood the land search is concentrating on the area east of Brownstown and Tramore, heading towards Rathmoylan and Dunmore East, while the helicopter is focussing on the coastal area west of Brownstown Head.

Low tide is due at about 12.30pm today and the search co-ordinators are keeping a large presence of volunteers on the backstrand at Tramore, Brownstown and also the area near the Tramore main strand in an attempt to find the man.
