A postmortem is due to be carried out on the body of man found dead in a car that crashed into a roundabout in Galway.

The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, has been named locally as Richard Beswick.

Gardaí say the car may have spent several days obscured from sight by bushes and trees on the Martin Roundabout, in the east of the city.

The body was recovered on Thursday after a passenger on a bus spotted a vehicle in the overgrowth and raised the alarm.

According to a Facebook group "Help Find Dickie", which was set up to help locate him, Mr Beswick was 69 years old.

A post on the page said Mr Beswick had been missing since Monday night.

Gardaí are investigating the crash and whether the man may have become disorientated as he approached the roundabout.

Garda believe the car was travelling from the Dublin direction and went through the middle of the roundabout.

The car could be seen in the trees from the direction heading east from Galway, but not from the direction it travelled.

Roads in the area were closed after the vehicle was found to facilitate a technical examination, but have since reopened.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses to contact Mill Street Garda station (091-53800).
