Dublin’s port tunnel has reopened after a mechanical fire in a truck near the M1/N1 southbound entrance of the tunnel led to its closure on Monday morning.

Both the northbound and southbound tunnels began re-opening shortly after 1.15pm on Monday once the Dublin Fire Brigade had brought the blaze under control and checked the area for safety. A spokeswoman for AA Roadwatch said all traffic delays had eased off by 2pm with no serious delays following the incident.

Rescue teams from the Dublin Fire Brigade were called to the scene at the M1/N1 southbound entrance to the tunnel shortly before 11am and brought the blaze under control in less than 15 minutes.

There were no injuries in the incident.

Four fire trucks, two emergency tenders, one foam tender, a tunnel response vehicle and two district officers were called to the scene.

Traffic heading into the city from the M1 was diverted at junction 2 Coolock while traffic coming from the M1/M50 interchange was diverted through Coolock.

Vehicles arriving at the Port Tunnel from the port side were forced to reroute through the East Wall and Clonliffe road.

There were also heavy traffic on the Drumcondra Road and Clonliffe Road, with significant delays on the Drumcondra Road heading from the airport into the city centre.
