Met Éireann at 3pm today lifted a yellow weather warning for heavy rainfall in Leinster, Cavan and Monaghan.

Rainfall of between 25 to 50mm had been expected and there were reports of flooding in some areas.

A landmark pub in Howth was inundated by water due to the hours of heavy rain which fell overnight.

The Bloody Stream at Howth Dart station was said to be several feet under water. A unit of the Dublin Fire Brigade was in attendance. Efforts to contact the pub were not so far successful.

A Garda spokeswoman at Howth station said there had been a considerable damage caused after serious flooding along Harbour Road, but that this had subsided later in the day.

Yellow weather warnings are issued for weather conditions that do not pose an immediate threat to the general population, but only to those exposed to risk by nature of their location or activity.

Met Éireann said rain would gradually clear slowly to the northeast through the afternoon and there would be sunny spells and scattered showers further west.

The left lane and hard shoulder of the M1 Belfast/Dublin Road southbound between junctions J4 Donabate and J3 Swords are now closed while motorway maintenance deals with flooding. The right lane is operational however there is a lot of surface water here too and extreme care is advised.

Drivers are advised to slow down, keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front and to use their dipped headlights.
