A man in his 30s has died following a road collision on Friday evening on the N5 between Charlestown and Swinford, Co Mayo.

Three vehicles, two articulated trucks and a car, were involved in the incident at about 4.45pm.

The deceased man was the only occupant of the car.

Emergency services were quickly on the scene. Both men driving the trucks were seriously injured and were taken to Mayo University Hospital in Castlebar to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. Following the collision the N5, which is the main Dublin to Westport road, was closed to traffic. Gardai, who are looking for witnesses to the impact, say the route will not be re-opened until about midday on Saturday at the earliest.
