A 50-year-old man was killed in a single-car crash in Co Sligo overnight.

The man's 4x4 went off the road and hit an embankment some 7km outside Ballina, Co Mayo on a secondary road off the main Sligo to Ballina road.

The incident at Corballa, on a road which leads to Enniscrone, took place at about 1am . The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and his remains were removed to the morgue at Sligo General Hospital.

The road (L6606) is closed to facilitate an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.
