A man aged 21 died when his vehicle hit a tree in Co Monaghan this morning.

The single-vehicle incident occurred on the N54 at Aghnamallagh, Smithborough, at about 9.30am.

The vehicle involved had been travelling from Monaghan town towards Smithborough at the time.

The driver, the sole occupant, was brought to Cavan General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The N54 was closed between Monaghan and Smithborough to facilitate an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this collision or anyone who was on the N54 between Monaghan and Smithborough at the time to contact them at Monaghan Garda station on 047 77200, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
