Services for the two Irish climbers who died on Mont Blanc last week have taken place this weekend.
Friends Colm Ennis (37) and Peter Britton (55), both members of the Rathgormack Climbing Club in Co Waterford, were killed when they fell in the Giant's Tooth section of the Mont Blanc range on July 23rd.
It is understood they fell around 200 metres in the Dent du Geant area of the French Alps after their rope broke loose.
Local mountain rescue PGHM Chamonix said the men died instantly during their descent.
There was a huge turnout this morning for the requiem mass at St Paul’s Church in Waterford City for the funeral of Mr Ennis (37).
A native of Lismore Park, he was the HR manager at Amazon’s customer service operations in Co Cork and previously worked with C&C Group as well as the Caulfield McCarthy Group.
Hundreds attended the removal this evening in Clonmel for Peter Britton (55). The senior roads engineer with Tipperary County Council will be laid to rest in Saint Patrick's cemetery in Clonmel after 1pm mass tomorrow at Saint Peter and Paul's Church in Clonmel.
Special guards of honour were provided by Rathgormack Climbing club as well as other clubs for the funerals and removals.
On average more than 100 climbers die on Mont Blanc each year due to its notoriously unpredictable weather, challenging cliff faces and crevices.
