Greystones Golf Club in Co Wicklow has been approached by a property development company interested in a taking over the course and moving the club to a new site near Delgany.

The €100 million-plus proposal, reminiscent of pre-crash deals in the construction sector, covers the club’s 127-acre town-centre location, incorporating a Georgian manor house on the Burnaby estate.

Expanding town

Since its creation in 1895 the course has become surrounded by the expanding town and many aspects could be intensively developed, particularly land within 1km of the Dart station.

The course also includes land fronting a Tesco shopping centre and land bordering Heathervue housing estate, close to Main Street.

It also has extensive access to the exclusive Burnaby estate, through Whitshed and Pavilion roads as well as Farm Lane, where single house sites can fetch €500,000.

The western end or "outer nine" holes of the course also has extensive access to the village of Killincarrig with frontage to an Aldi supermarket and local tennis and rugby clubs.

The nearby Charlesland Golf Club is not affected by the proposed deal. Under the terms of the offer from Castlepark Building Company, the club would be relocated to Bellvue Hill in Delgany, between the existing Delgany Golf Club and the Glen O' The Downs Golf Club.

The building firm is owned by the Moore family, who have addresses in Denmark and Dún Laoghaire. A spokesman said the family did not wish to comment.

Greystones Golf Club secretary manager Ross Robertson said the process was at a "very, very, very early stage". He said the letter from Castlepark had been circulated to members to keep everybody informed.
