Gardaí in North Cork have arrested a 50-year-old man for questioning following the seizure of €100,000 worth of drugs when they stopped and searched a car on the Cork-Mallow Road.

Officers from the Mallow District Drugs Unit arrested the man after stopping and searching a car on the N20 at Rathduff at about 2pm when they found 1.5kg of cocaine hidden in the car.

The man, who is from the Midleton area, was arrested under drugs trafficking legislation which allows gardaí to detain suspects for up to seven days before they must be charged or released.

Gardaí conveyed the man to Mallow Garda station where they are continuing to question him about the cocaine which they believe was destined for the local Cork market.

The drugs have been forwarded to the Forensic Science Ireland laboratory in Dublin for analysis to confirm Garda suspicions that the substance is cocaine and to establish its purity.
