Gardaí investigating serious and organised crime in Finglas, Dublin have sezied drugs estimated to be worth more than €70,000.

Cannabis and Zopiclone tablets (subject to analysis) with an estimated street value of €70,600 were discovered during an “intelligence led” operation on Monday afternoon, gardaí said.

Nobody was arrested during the operation and a Garda spokesman said investigations were ongoing.

Gardaí began a murder inquiry in Finglas at the weekend after a man was shot dead in the area in the early hours of Sunday.

The man, identified as James Whelan (29), is understood to have been involved in organised crime in the Finglas area. Gardaí believe he was aligned to a gang that was involved in a feud with another group from the area.

The rival gang is led by a man in his 20s who has emerged in recent years as a key figure in organised crime in north Dublin.

While gardaí have carried out significant operations in recent months against the gang leader and his associates, feuding has been worsening in the Finglas area of late.

One early line of inquiry is that the fatal shooting is feud-related. However, Garda sources stressed that the investigation was still in its infancy.
