A plaque in honour of the late Father Ted actor Dermot Morgan has been unveiled in Co Dublin.

The plaque has been erected in Mount Merrion, where the comedian grew up, before attending Oatlands College and University College Dublin.

Morgan is most well-known for his role as Fr Ted Crilly in the Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted.

He is also fondly remembered for his work on RTÉ’s The Live Mike and Scrap Saturday.

Morgan died suddenly from a heart attack aged 45 in 1998.

The commemorative plaque has been placed on the wall of McGuire’s shop on Deerpark Road, where Morgan was a customer.

It pays tribute to Morgan as an “actor, writer, iconoclast, satirist” and describes him as a pioneer.

Morgan’s family

The Morgan family, including his three sons Don, Rob and Ben, were present when Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council unveiled the plaque on Thursday.

The plaque, which was funded by the council and cost about €1,000, is the sixth civic memorial erected in the area, including tributes to Nobel Prize-winning author Samuel Beckett and founder of the Land League Michael Davitt.
