Industrial production fell by 0.8pc in January 2009 compared to the same month a year ago, according to new figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The most significant changes were in the 'Chemical and Chemical Product', 'Radio Television and Communications', and 'Electrical Machinery and Apparatus' segments.

The seasonally adjusted volume of industrial production for 'Manufacturing Industries' for the three month period from November 2008 to January 2009 was 2.9pc lower than in the preceding three month period.

The "Modern" Sector, which comprises

a number of high-technology and chemical sectors, showed an annual increase in production for January 2009 of 3.7pc while a decrease of 11.3pc was recorded in the "Traditional" Sector .

The seasonally adjusted industrial turnover index for 'Manufacturing Industries' was 3 pc lower in the three month period to the end of January 2009.

On an annual basis turnover was 1.7pc higher when compared with January 2008.
